Hammer Films are back and last year celebrated their 90th anniversary.\n \nEddie Izzard gives a riveting performance as a reclusive scientist and her murderous alter-ego in Joe Stephenson's gripping re-imagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's seminal horror story. Co-starring Scott Chambers and Lindsay Duncan, Doctor Jekyll channels the sinister paranoia of Hammer's classic psycho-thrillers while still remaining compelling, fresh, and contemporary.\n \nOur director, Joe Stephenson, was looking for a bold, gothic, and dramatic score mixing traditional Hammer Films tropes with a modern sensibility.\nMuch like Jekyll and Hyde, this is a score of two parts, recorded with two different orchestras - the Budapest Art Orchestra and The Royal Scottish National Orchestra.\nThis helped to emphasise the split personality of the score: switching from sparse, haunting horror to the operatic gothic explosions we hear towards the end of the film.\nA 30-person choir helped achieve a sense of scale where needed, and Hyde’s textural effects are performed on a variety of rare archaic instruments such as the Viola Da Gamba and Stroh Violin which help to evoke the sense of an ancient evil.\nWith a gorgeous smoky coloured vinyl, and Sean Longmore’s stunning bespoke artwork, this is a limited release that I’m eagerly awaiting to display on my own shelf.\nThe future of Hammer Films is bright, and I’m thrilled that fans can celebrate its rebirth with a score that honours the past while eagerly stepping into a new era." - Blair Mowat
